Weekly Frame: Beyond Pretty Images

Hey Reader,

Today we'll go through a few interesting topics such as perfectionism, storytelling, and short videos. I've also added key takeaways for your convenience. Feel free to skip to the part that interests you.

This Week's Frame

Key Takeaway: Don't over complicate your videos. Make them as easy as humanly possible to produce.

One of the most frequent reasons why creators stop making content is because they burn out. And I get it. Creating a YouTube video every single week or short videos every single day is hard. But since consistency is the most important metric, how can you avoid burnout?

Simply make it easy. If it takes you 40h to produce a single YouTube video, you probably should rethink your format. Instead of being a perfectionist with every single shot, focus on the 80/20 rule. Let's be honest, nobody would notice anyway.

So get rid of anything that stops you from getting your content done. And if it means throwing away your video format all together, then that's what you have to do. Believe me, you do yourself a favor.

Frame by Frame

Key Takeaway: Not much this week, but an interesting movie I wanted to share.

This week I got to watch "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy". Well, usually I'm not too much into comedies, but I thought, let's give it a shot.

And honestly, I got surprised! At its core, it’s not just about humor, it delves into themes of grief, resilience, and starting over. It carries an emotional depth that adds weight to the story, making it more than just another rom-com.

And yet, despite its more serious undertones, it never loses that signature Bridget Jones charm, and has a lot of funny moments.

It’s fun, emotional, and genuinely worth a watch. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Frame it Better

Key Takeaway: Pretty visuals are not enough these days, differentiate yourself with good storytelling and structure.

Almost everyone can create good looking cinematic videos these days. Phones and cameras got so good in the recent years that most people have access to high-end cameras. So how can we differentiate ourselves?

It's Storytelling. Not everyone can tell good stories. It's certainly something that can be learned, but if you look on YouTube, not so many have figured it out. Your ability to tell your unique stories differentiates you from everyone else.

But what makes a good story? Well, a lot of things, but an important one is having good story structure. The easiest way is to follow a 3 Act Structure. There's a beginning, middle, and end. If you want to learn more about it, make sure to follow me on YouTube since I'll be posting a video on that soon.

Another aspect is character development. Which change does your character (you) or your audience experience when watching your video? Think about point A (the beginning) and point B (the end).

If you only implement these two aspects, you'll be already better off than most people.

Final Frame

Key Takeaway: Why I start again with short videos.

I haven't published any short videos for a long time. And that was because I simply don't enjoy making them. Or let's say it always took me too much effort.

But recently I realized that short videos are a good way for experimentation. It always takes me ages to publish a YouTube video (which I certainly need to change). But short videos are done quickly. There's no need for long scripts or a lot of planning. And if it's not good, well, after 24h nobody will see it anyways.

So you can expect a lot of new content coming soon. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel to stay up-to-date!

That's it for today, see you in the next one.

Markus

Hey Reader, Today we talk about AI in filmmaking, an easy way to improve your stories, and a great storytelling video recommendation. This Week's Frame Key Takeaway: AI in Filmmaking: Threat or Tool? It's been more than two years ago that ChatGPT was released and a lot of other AI tools became widely available. I'm pretty sure, at this point everyone has used some AI products. I think that the filmmaking space benefits from this tremendously. From tools like Gling that help you with edits, to...

Hey Reader, Today we talk about simplifying your recording workflow, a way to find interesting stories, and the Oscar winner Flow. This Week's Frame Key Takeaway: Simple is better. Recently I found that a lot of creators feel stuck with creating videos. Not because they don't have any content ideas, but rather because they are stuck with their gear and setup. I know it from myself, as more fancy gear you get, as more time it takes to set it up. And especially if you don't have a fixed setup...

Hey Reader, Today we talk about the importance of audio vs video, I share some actionable questions to improve your stories, and a short note on one of my favorite Netflix shows. This Week's Frame Key Takeaway: Don't underestimate the power of good audio. A good mic might be a better investment than a new camera or lens. I know we are always looking for new shiny gear that gets our craft to the next level. Cameras, drones, anamorphic lenses, tube lights... But are they really doing that much...
